Join us for a review of the biggest scientific stories of the year, as told by the team at New Scientist. Plus, put your questions to our expert panel of journalists about their favourite articles of 2023 and what their hopes and fears are for science in 2024 and beyond.

Hosted by Timothy Revell and Christie Taylor.

Timothy Revell is a journalist and lapsed mathematician. He is the Deputy US Editor for New Scientist, based in New York. As a reporter and editor, he specialises in technology and mathematics, covering everything from artificial intelligence to the Abel prize. He appears regularly on WNYC's Science Friday, as well as on other podcasts and radio to talk about the latest developments in science. He has a master's degree in mathematics and a Ph.D. in computer science. 

Christie Taylor is a multimedia reporter for New Scientist in New York. She edits and co-hosts the New Scientist Weekly podcast, as well as overseeing biweekly CultureLab episodes about science and the arts. Before joining New Scientist, Christie produced for the popular radio show Science Friday. She holds degrees in sociology and journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Sam Wong is an assistant news editor who has worked at New Scientist since 2015. He also writes a monthly science of cooking column, presents the Science with Sam video series and sets cryptic crosswords for the magazine. He has a degree in natural sciences from the University of Cambridge and a MSc in science communication from Imperial College London. He has also written science stories for The Guardian, Nature and Mosaic. His favourite subjects include food, drugs and animals.

Clare Wilson is a health journalist focused on medicine, health policy, neuroscience, archaeology and the life sciences. She previously edited medical features for New Scientist. Before that, Clare was a reporter for Hospital Doctor, a weekly magazine for doctors, and for Scrip, a newsletter for the pharmaceutical industry. She writes New Scientist’s weekly health newsletter, which goes out on Saturdays, and is an occasional guest on the BBC World Service health magazine program, called Health Check. She has won awards from the Medical Journalists’ Association and the Guild of Health Writers. She has a BSc in Cell Biology from the University of Manchester.

Leah Crane is the physics and space reporter at New Scientist, covering topics ranging from private space flight to cosmology to quantum mechanics. She is based in Chicago. Prior to joining New Scientist in 2016, her work has been published at outlets including SpaceNews, Eos, Smithsonian Magazine, and Symmetry Magazine. She writes New Scientist's weekly space newsletter, Launchpad.

Booking information:

This online event will start at 18.00 UK time on Tuesday 12 December 2023 and will last for approximately one hour. Access to a recording of the event will be exclusively available to ticket purchasers for the 12 months following the live event. The on-demand recording will be available to view within 24 hours of the live discussion.

Eventbrite will email you a confirmation immediately after purchase. You will also receive a separate email from our virtual events platform, with a link to access the event auditorium within a week of the event start date; please note that each link is unique and should not be shared. The event auditorium will also provide access to the other items included in your ticket.

Tickets are non-transferable to any other New Scientist event.

All tickets are non-refundable.

New Scientist reserves the right to alter the event and its line-up, or cancel the event. In the unlikely event of cancellation, all tickets will be fully refunded. New Scientist Ltd will not be liable for any additional expenses incurred by ticket holders in relation to the event.
